Our CSR - Helping Village Schools in India
Shanghai Properties Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Program
Our Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Program assists poor and disadvantaged children in rural India. Since 1994 we have provided donations and in kind support to the New Life English School (NLES) in Janakpur, Madyah Pradesh. To date we have donated funds to build a new school wing, a children’s hostel (Adrienne Farrelly Children’s Home), purchase new computers, a TV set, books, stationary, medicines, toys, Christmas decorations and clothes.

Benefits of CSR program
We have found many benefits in having a CSR program. Some are as follows:
Why India?
India has one of the highest illiteracy rates in the world. Only 75% of boys and 61% of girls aged 6 to 10 years attend school. A staggering 83 million children don’t receive any education. These children work as either domestic or field laborers, work as “bonded children”, spending 12 hr days in silk factories or become child laborers in sweat shops. Sadly, some children are sold by their families to work as child sex slaves. These are all tragic ways to spend one’s childhood so we are doing our best to help.
Lack of development
Basic education such as reading and writing is a key economic indicator for the progress of a country. People need to be able to generate their own income and lack of literacy limits this. India’s huge illiteracy rate is one of the main factors preventing its development.
Human rights
We believe that every person should be given a chance to generate their own income, raise their economic and social standard of living and improve their general quality of life. They should be culturally and socially responsible and be allowed to participate in a democratic society. Sadly however, illiterate people aren’t given any choice. They are easily manipulated, cheated, exploited and abused and are often excluded from society. They are treated with little dignity or respect and are unaware of their own rights. They also have limited employment possibilities and are trapped in a never ending cycle of poverty.
Needs of New Life English School (NLES)
The New Life English School is totally self funded and receives no government or church assistance. Currently, they have no Senior High School so students must move to a city 4 hours away to complete their education. Many parents cannot afford this and sadly many children have to drop out of school and can’t complete their secondary. The school needs to build a four roomed Senior High School so they can open classes for Years 11 & 12. Around USD$5,000 is needed for the new building, teacher’s salaries, new lab equipment and computers.
Low cost Hindi Schools
Low cost classes teaching basic reading and writing skills are being opened in poor remote rural villages. The cost of running these small schools is around USD$500 per year and benefits hundreds of children and adults.
