Advice of Leasing (return)
ROI - The Real Need for Cross Cultural Training
RETURN ON INVESTMENT
Expatriates - MNC’s with operations abroad, need to employ expatriates because of limited qualified, trained and experienced locals. They also need to develop management structures as well as implant their company’s culture. Expatriates have a high operational value which is reflected by their salaries which increase 3 to 4 fold when working abroad.
Return on investment - A company can spend up to USD$1million on a 3 year expatriate contract and a return on such a high investment is needed.
Failures –Moving abroad can have a huge affect on people’s lives. Failure rates of expatriate postings run around 20%. With each failed posting there are huge financial losses. A failed posting could cause a disgruntled expatriate to behave improperly and cause major losses to hard won market share. They could also cause poor relations with vendors and/or clients and permanently damage a company’s reputation. Internally they can create poor staff morale which in turn results in poor perfomance and production. Apart from this, rehiring, training & development of new expatriates also costs a great deal.
Reasons - Most failed postings occur because the employee and/or their family can’t adapt to their new culture. In the emerging markets of Asia, expatriates feel that language and culture had the biggest impact on them. This finding reflects recent surveys of MNC’s showing nearly 60% of MNC’s provide cross cultural training. 73% of expats report that CCT has high value and it is now seen as an important tool in the success of an expatriate’s assignment.
Repatriation – Expatriation doesn’t end when people return home. Repatriaies need training to intergrate back into their home environment. With up to 50% leaving within the first 2 years of their return home, losses on investment still occur. Companies can’t truly measure their ROI until their expatriates are successfully repatriated.
